STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) – The Wisconsin Badgers will face the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point this fall in an exhibition game that will also raise money for a good cause.
The event will be held on September 27th and proceeds will go toward Coach Gard’s foundation “Garding Against Cancer” which benefits those fighting cancer around Wisconsin.
When asked about what this game means for the area, Coach Gard said, “The biggest thing is that we can come here to Stevens Point and help cancer patients and their families in their fight against cancer. Obviously, we do a lot of funding for research in Madison, but as we go across the state to different cities and areas, the help gets generated toward patient care and grassroots initiatives that help right here in the Stevens Point area.”
In 2016, a little more than a year after Greg Gard’s father Glen passed away from brain cancer, the Garding Against Cancer campaign began.
Earlier this month, close to 700 people came out to support the UW Carbone Cancer Center and Garding Against Cancer. A UW official reported that the event raised close to $900,000.
When asked about the impact this event will have on the community, UWSP head coach Kent Dernbach said, “Every family has been affected by cancer one way or another, and when you’re affected by that, like we all are, you see the struggle that family members go through or experience it firsthand, so when funds are being raised and you can actually keep that locally, it just means a little bit more, and I hope everyone comes to support such a great event.”
Gard has visited cities all around the state to help raise money in addition to hosting an annual event at the Kohl Center. More than $7 million has been raised with the aid of Garding Against Cancer.
