MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Josh Donaldson, who was released by the New York Yankees earlier this week, will find himself in the thick of the National League postseason chase.
The Milwaukee Brewers signed the former American League MVP to a minor league contract on Thursday, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.
Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic were the first to report that the two sides were considering a deal.
Donaldson was released by the Yankees on Tuesday. This season, he hit 142/.225/.434 with 10 home runs in 106 at-bats in 33 games.
Going into the last month of the season, the Brewers are desperate for output at third base. Their third basemen have a combined stat line of 251/.311/.397.
Andruw Monasterio, Milwaukee’s starter at third base for the previous two months, has run into trouble. Since July 29th, he has played in 28 games, hitting only 206/.277/.284.
Even though Donaldson isn’t the player he was at his best, a playoff contender like Milwaukee will find value in him as a bat off the bench. The 37-year-old isn’t batting for average against anyone, but in 26 at-bats this season versus lefties, he has a 692 slugging percentage and four home runs.
