PHOENIX, AZ (WSAU) — The Milwaukee Brewers begin spring training today amid many changes. The biggest being a new manager for the first time since 2015.
Pat Murphy takes over for Craig Counsell who left to take the manager’s job with the Chicago Cubs. He’s replaced by his long time bench coach Pat Murphy. Many of the Brewers coaches are back including pitching coach Chris Hook. One new face is former Brewers player Rickie Weeks who joins Murphys staff as bench coach.
The Brewers will also be without their top two pitchers from previous years as Brandon Woodruff was resigned after an arm injury and Corbin Burnes was traded to the Baltimore Orioles.
New players expected in camp include pitchers Jakob Junis and DL Hall, catcher Eric Haase andinfielders Jake Bauers, Rhys Hoskins and Joey Ortiz. Minor league standout Jackson Chourio, one of the top prospects in baseball, is expected to make a run at the starting center field job.
Pitchers and catcher have their first workout today with the first full squad workout scheduled for early next week.
The Brewers first spring training game is set for February 24th against the San Diego Padres. The Brewers open the regular season March 28th at New York vs the Mets. The home opener is April 2nd vs the Minnesota Twins
