CONLEY COMMENTARY (WSAU) – Ben Armstrong, a former host of the WSAU Wisconsin Morning News, has lost his battle with cancer. He was buried yesterday in a private ceremony.
Ben was at WSAU from 2017 to 2021. Those were a significant four years. It was the time when Donald Trump lost a contested election and the COVID virus first appeared. Either of those would be the stories of a lifetime for a talk show host. They drove a tremendous numbers of listeners to our radio station. With Ben as host, this broadcast was honored as Morning Show of the Year by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association in 2018.
And yet I don’’t think Ben would want to be remembered for those things. Ben was devout in his Christian faith. His was a bold and unapologetic witness. He saw everything through the lens of God’s will. I never knew him to waiver. I think, to Ben, those things would have been most important.
Ben had a cancer scare in 2019. He was off for an extended period, and returned to this microphone with what we thought was a clean bill of health. About a year ago, on his podcast, Ben shared with his audience that he’d had more health problems that were inoperable and that his prognosis was not good. Ben lost that fight with cancer last Thursday.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
My thoughts are with Ben’s wife and children. I hope they’ll find comfort at this difficult time.
Ben Armstrong was 47.
