WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – On the tiny Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, the Good News Project in Wausau is kicking off its second annual math camp, but conditions are difficult due to rain and gusts from Hurricane Beryl.
Executive Director Christine Daniels emphasizes the importance of their goal in light of the country’s low math results among teenagers. Daniels stated, “Less than 50% of all the students in the country were even passing their math scores at the age of 16, and they see this as a longer-term issue because of the economy. If people don’t know basic math, how are they going to be in business?”
With the hurricane arriving so early in the year, Daniels says they’re waiting for it to hit before making adjustments. She said, “We partner with a community college in St. Lucia, it’s called Sir Arthur Community College and they’re right on the top of a mountain, so they’re much more likely to be getting hit by the winds and the rains.”
Daniels said that the Saint Lucian government has also assisted them with food and energy that the local Sandals resort has also contributed to the initiative, and that with all of the assistance they’ve received, she is certain that the camp will proceed as planned.
