STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The man accused of killing his parents in the Portage County Town of New Hope on July 6th has been scheduled for a competency hearing.
John Shulfer was in court on Friday, where a judge extended the time limits for a preliminary hearing in the case while a public defender is assigned to the case. The 35-year-old is accused of killing his parents, Paula and Dale Shulfer, before police shot him when he refused to drop his weapon.
He was treated at the scene and hospitalized, then immediately booked into the Portage County Jail after he was discharged.
Investigators say he shot the couple at their home in the Town of New Hope in early July. Two children were also present at the time; they were turned over to a responsible party..

Charges against him include two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and causing mental harm to a child through the use of a dangerous weapon. All charges include repeat modifiers.
He’s currently being held on a $2 million cash bond and faces an automatic life sentence on the homicide counts alone. Further court action has been scheduled for August 20th.
An investigation determined that the officers were justified in using force during the incident.
