MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers are one of the best teams in the National League, but none of their star position players are currently slated to start in July’s big game after the first round voting totals were announced on Monday.
According to the MLB, Brewers second baseman Brice Turang is closing in on Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott for the second most votes to start at second base for the National League squad, while Braves star Ozzie Albies leads both Turang and Stott by more than 100,000 votes.
The same goes for Brewers catcher William Contreras, who now has the fourth most votes among National League catchers. Braves catcher Drake Baldwin leads the ballot with nearly a million votes, while Dodgers catcher Will Smith is in second, requiring more than 300,000 votes to catch Baldwin. Contreras needs approximately 150,000 votes to pass Phillies catcher J.T Realmuto for third place on the list.
Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers has been one of the biggest surprises of the season so far, but he is currently trailing Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper by almost 400,000 votes for third place and Braves star Matt Olson by nearly 600,000 votes for second place on the list.
Joey Ortiz and Luis Rengifo are both in last place in the voting for starting NL third baseman and shortstop, respectively, with Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams and Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy starting for the National League if voting finished tonight.
Even though Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani leads Christian Yelich by more than 900,000 votes for first place in the DH voting, Yelich still has a chance to overtake Braves designated hitter Dominic Smith for third place. Jackson Chourio, currently ranked 15th among NL outfielders, could overtake Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong for fourteenth place on the ballot with just another 14,000 votes, and Phillies outfielder Adolis Garcia for sole possession of thirteenth place with an additional 75,000 votes.
