GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – One of the top NFL draft experts broke down the Packers’ selection of former TCU receiver/running back Savion Williams on Thursday, believing that his upside outweighed his biggest flaw.
According to former ESPN draft expert Todd McShay, Williams, who was selected by the Packers in the 3rd round of last week’s 2025 NFL Draft, could be exciting to watch in head coach Matt LaFleur’s offense, saying, “In today’s NFL, with that coach and with the other weapons at receiver and with that quarterback, now we’ve just got this chess piece, and you have no idea on Sunday how we’re going to roll him out. And he can help in the return game. They will get their value for him. I’m convinced of that. There were a handful of places I wanted to see him land in the NFL, and this is absolutely one of them.”
McShay also provided his ideal current NFL player comparison for Williams, saying, “He reminded me, and I know the comp is Cordarrelle Patterson, and a lot of times it’s kind of lazy, but this one’s kind of accurate. I don’t get the sense that he’s a deep student of tape and tendencies. There will be routes where he’s tripping and falling on the ground getting in and out of breaks, but then you watch the tape.”
On 111 rushes (51) and receptions (60), Williams accounted for 40 missed tackles this past season for the Horned Frogs, according to Pro Football Focus. He also impressed scouts during the NFL combine, running a 4.48 40-yard dash despite weighing in at 222 lbs.
The biggest concern on Williams is his collegiate career drop percentage (11.8%), which shows up on tape often but is then usually shortly followed by Williams making an impressive catch for a touchdown while double covered or spinning and running over defenders on his way to a long touchdown.
Overall, McShay says Williams is a great all-around player, saying, “Let’s just get him the football and let’s also use him as a decoy, because teams are going to be fearful when this massive human being that can run in the 4.4s comes out on the field and there’s this absolute worry of, ‘OK, what if they get him the ball at almost 6-foot-4, 222 with 4.48 speed.”
Williams will make his Packers debut when Green Bay holds its 2025 rookie minicamp this weekend on May 2-3.
