WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – On Monday, the Parks and Recreation Committee provided an update on the Riverside Park Remediation project.
Department Director Jamie Polley said the project is starting to gain some traction and that the contract is out for bid. She also stated that bids will be opened on the 18th.
“The public works director will be bringing forward the budget request to get the work done to the finance committee following that they don’t come before city council so that will also be apart of the scheduling for the contract and receive an estimated timeline,” Polley said of the project’s next steps.
Last summer, the city began the process of excavating the contaminated soil in Riverside Park in order to conduct additional surveys and testing.
The Wausau Finance Committee previously approved spending $28,600 from the city’s environmental fund to allow REI to conduct soil sampling and create detailed site maps in order to determine the full scope of the project before heavy lifting begins.
For several years, the status of the soil in Riverside Park has been a source of contention in Wausau, with both the city and community groups conducting multiple rounds of testing to determine the amount of contamination present.
