WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Some of the playgrounds in Wisconsin Rapids will look a little different next year, thanks to a familiar partnership between the school district and the Legacy Foundation.
The two had partnered on other projects in the past, and now the charity foundation is helping the district upgrade their playground equipment. Superintendent Craig Broeren said that the main goal is to make the playgrounds more accessible to everyone. Broeren said, “We’re utilizing that approach with that poured-in-place, that rubberized surface on the ground, for both safety and aesthetics as well as individuals with limited mobility.”
It’s been a long time since their current playground equipment was installed, Broeren said it was about time for an upgrade.
He said, “Most of the playgrounds in the district are getting to a point where they needed to be updated or replaced, most of the ages of the playground are from the 90s, so you’re talking 20 to 30 years.”
With a majority of the financial support coming from the legacy foundation, Broeren said taxpayers won’t feel the brunt of it, and that he was thankful for their help.
Broeren added, “Without their support I can tell you these projects wouldn’t have taken place, because when it’s all said and done, the total spend on all of this going to be around $5 million dollars, and the district of course will only be spending just a little over a million toward that.”
In total, eight projects are slated to be done by the end of next year, at all of the district’s elementary schools, and Wisconsin Rapids Area Middle School. Four of them should be ready by the time the kids come back in the Fall.
